Singaporean climbers to
scale Xixabangma peak in Tibet.

Singaporean climbers will be embarking
on yet another mountain climbing expedition.
In March next year, 4 experienced climbers,
who were part of the Everest team in 1998, will attempt to
scale Xixabangma, the 14th highest mountain in the world.
The 8,000 metre high peak in Tibet will
test the strength of the climbers, who will be making the
climb without oxygen tanks.
Dr Robert Goh, Team Leader, Xixabangma
Expedition, said, "We feel that it's timely to push mountaineering
up by doing it alpine style, without oxygen, without pre-built
camps and without Sherpas."
The expedition also includes 10 students,
who will try for the base camp at 5,000 metres.
Among the students is NUS student Adrian
Yap, who is hearing-impaired.
However, the 22-year-old is not going to
let his impairment hold him back in life, or from conquering
a mountain.
He said, "I feel it's more mental and physical
preparation. I don't think my impairment will affect me and
I hope I will do better than normal people."
The whole team will leave for Nepal in
October to train for the attempt.
So far, they have raised a third of the
S$685,000 needed for the expedition and are looking for more
sponsors.
