The National Youth Council, Singapore
(NYC) is the national co-ordinating agency for youth and
youth sector development, playing the role of a leader and
champion of youth matters. The NYC works closely with the
local and international youth sector, engages public and private
sectors to bring about new and innovative youth developmental
opportunities to meet changing needs of our youth.
The NYC seeks to nurture a World-Ready
Youth - youth with the values, mindset and skills to thrive
and succeed in a global environment and yet maintain strong
ties to their family, community and Singapore. This is encapsulated
in the Vision for Youth in the 21st Century as captured in
five attributes: "Dare to Dream", " Can Do",
"Never Say Die", "Walk the Talk", and
"Serve by Doing".

The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) is at
the helm in making sports a way of life among Singaporeans
and nurturing top talents into world champions. This is aptly
summed up in our mission Statement: Towards A Sporting Nation".
To achieve this, the SSC adopts the Sports For All policy
which is implemented through the promotion of the Sports For
Life and SPEX 21 (Sports Excellence 21) programmes.
SPEX 21 is a national initiative which sets out the strategic
plans and directions for high-performance athletes in Singapore,
aimed at raising the overall standard of sports in Singapore
and the competitive spirit of Singaporeans by building a tradition
for excellence in sports, with focus is seven "Core" sports
and seven "Merit" sports.
Although mountaineering is not one of these, the Council is
supportive of the Xixabangma Expedition 2002 because of its
endeavour to break new ground and push the sport to greater
excellence, in keeping with the spirit of SPEX 21.
