The Mount Vinson team, lead by Dr Mok and including Edwin Siew, Lee Leng Yen, and Kuak Nam Jin travelled to the Cascades, a volcanic mountain range in North America, comprising Mt Adams, Mt Baker and Mt Rainer. Here the team was able to sharpen their glacial skills as well as acclimatise to the change in altitude.
"The high altitude presented a real challenge for us, so we started gently with an attempt of Mt Adams, which is abt 4000 metres high. Unfortunately, bad weather and poor visibility prevented us from reaching the peak. We had to turn back and wait for two days for the weather to clear. However, it was a good indication of the difficulties we could face at Mount Vinson" said Mok.
"We were running behind schedule at this stage, so we proceeded to climb Mount Rainer, which is abt 4350 metres high and similar to Vinson Massif. During that attempt, we encountered an incredible avalanche of rock and ice - some the size of a five-room HDB flat," Dr Mok added. "Nevertheless we perservered and finally the team made it to the top".
The Vinson Massif team departs December 10 for Santiago, Chile. From there they will be flown to Punta Arenas and then to Patriot Hills. They will set up two high camps at Vinson Massif before attempting a final summit which, weather permitting, will take approximately 3 weeks.
