Khoo Swee Chiow, who heads up the South Pole team, undertook an intensive training course at Mount Cook, New Zealand, with fellow team mates Robert Goh, David Lim and Ang Yau Choon. Mountaineering experts, Fox Guides, provided the team with invaluable knowledge to equip them against the harsh conditions at the Antarctica.
Khoo said: "Training in such conditions allowed us to practise our crevasse rescue techniques, work on our sledging skills and finalise our expedition strategies. At the same time it gave us a chance to adapt to the weather conditions and learn how to use techniques to prevent physical injuries such as frostbite, exhaustion and hypothermia."
There were some exciting moments. "One day, we experienced a very bad storm. We decided to leave our tents and sit out the storm at our base camp. Two days later, once the storm had cleared, we discovered our tents had collapsed, on of the sledges had been blown more than 200 metres away and the other was completely buried in snow."
The South Pole team departs in October 14 for Santiago, Chile. From there they will be flown to Punta Arenas and then to Patriot Hills to prepare for their 65-day trek.
