The Singapore Xixabangma
Expedition team is planning to set new mountaineering standards
here by attempting the 8,027 metre Himalayan peak "alpine
style".
This means the
climbers will make their trip without supplementary oxygen
and pre-built camps along the way.
Despite their tight
budget of $350,000, the three men team is optimistic. THeir
original sponsorship target was over $680,000, but funds have
not been forthcoming.
Saud team leader
Dr Robert Goh: "We basically have to go without the frills...
such as better satellite communication devices."
The team - consisting of Dr Goh, Dr Mok
Ying Jang and Mr Edwin Siew - will be carrying their own tents
in their 35kg backpacks. All three were part of Singapore's
Everest team in 1998. A fourth member, Mrs Lulin Reutens,
will provide support from base camp.
They will leave for Kathmandu this Sunday.
